Veterinary and Food Department

Basic tasks of the Department are as follows:

- policy development and implementation (coordination) in the areas of food safety and quality, animal health, protection and welfare:

- food quality and marketing standards, safety of food chain and hygiene, labeling, official food control, the national focus point of Codex Alimentarius;

- food chain – regarding foods, where food additives, flavorings, ferments and extracting solvent are used, maximum allowed limits of contaminants and pesticides, food for special nutrition uses (PARNUT), food supplements, food to which vitamins and minerals are added, ionized foods, drinking water, mineral water and spring water, materials and articles intended to come into contact with food;

- animal health, the chain of veterinary drugs, monitoring of veterinary drug residues, restricting of antimicrobial resistance, the chain of animal by-products, trade in animals, including issuing of health certificates, control on animals on the borders, production of animal feed, labeling, control, placing on the market and safety of animal feed;

- protection and welfare of animals used in experiments, pet animals and agricultural animals;

- organic agriculture, quality schemes of agricultural and food products (Protected Denomination of Origin, Protected Geographical Indication and Guaranteed Traditional Specialties schemes, the national food quality scheme and organic farming scheme), genetically modifies organisms and novel foods;

- preparing of regulatory acts and planning documents within the Department’s competence:

- coordination of the State monitoring and control programs and monitoring within areas of the Department’s competence;

- providing opinions on regulatory acts drafted by other Departments of the Ministry of Agriculture and other institutions;

- representation of sectoral interests, falling within the competence of the Department, in the national and international institutions, as well as defending of Latvia’s position in the national institutions and in working groups and meetings the European Union, European Council, Codex Alimentarius, International Office of Epizootics, the World Trade Organization, Nordic-Baltic and other international organizations.
