Latvia together with other Member States in Brussels obstructs the guidelines for development of the Common Agricultural Policy after 2013 proposed by the French Presidency

Today in Brussels at the meeting of the EU Council of Ministers for Agriculture and Fisheries discussions were ongoing on the future of the EU agricultural policy after 2013, Latvia voted “against” and obstructed the Council Conclusions prepared by the French Presidency concerning the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) after 2013. Against the proposal for Conclusions voted also U.K. and Sweden but for another reasons.

In order to adopt such a document the Council must achieve a unanimous consent by all the Member States.

Latvia proposed to incorporate in the text of the Decisions some essential issues of which the basic one is: before 2013 to assess and decide on impartial and relevantly less historic criteria for distribution of financial resources particularly regarding direct aid schemes. This position is of a core importance for Latvia and unfortunately if it is not unambiguously incorporated in the wording of the decisions, Latvia’s position was explicitly negative.
