Latvian Presidency will ask Member States to approve conclusions for CAP simplification

On Monday May 11, in Brussels, the Minister for Agriculture, Jānis Dūklavs will chair the meeting of the EU Council of Ministers for Agriculture and Fisheries.

At the meeting, reaching of a common agreement of Ministers from EU Member States is planned on the Council’s common position, regarding the proposal for Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on production of organic products and labeling of organic products. The proposal will ensure the necessary improvements in the current regulation of organic farming and enhance consumers’ trust in organic production.

At the meeting, the Latvian Presidency will ask the Ministers for Agriculture of Member States to approve the Council’s conclusions on simplification of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The discussions, mentioned in the Council’s conclusions, have singled out the areas where the most of attention must be paid to the simplification aspects, for example, greening and control on direct payments, conditions for action programs and producer organizations in fruit and vegetable sector, strengthening of rural development programs.

Whereas, Slovenia would like to draw more attention of the Presidency, farmers and society in general to man-made factors, which are leading to diminishing of honey-bee population. One third of the volume of food produced in the world is dependent on pollination and bees play the most important role in this process. Unfortunately, apiaries are endangered in particularly intensively managed territories therefore, Slovenia will suggest declaring May 20 as the World Bee Day.
