The Minister for Agriculture: Good forest management is the basis for a dynamic development of the sector
From May 4 to 15, during the Latvian Presidency of the EU Council, in New York, USA, the 11th session of the U.N. Forest Forum is being held. Participants of the Forum are working on the joint Resolution, outlining further development of the Forest Forum, improving capacity of the Forum Secretariat and a support function to facilitate a sustainable forest management.
On May 13 and 14, during the Forest Forum, a meeting is also held for high-level officials, which should result in a declaration of Ministers. On May 13, at the high-level meeting, the Latvian Minister for Agriculture, Jānis Dūklavs represented the European Union and expressed the common position of the EU Member States.
Addressing the high-level officials at the Forum, Jānis Dūklavs noted that fifteen years have passed since the Forest Forum was established, and it has since become an integral part of an International Agreement on Forests. Multifunctionality of forests and a sustainable forest management are still the positions, which the major global social, economic and the environmental processes must be viewed from.
Significance of a sustainably managed forest, as a resource, is very high in bioeconomy. To be able to properly take care of this value, an improved forest management is necessary, at the same time securing forest ownership rights and involvement of sectoral stakeholders. “In Latvia, the State ranking fourth as the most densely covered with forests in the European Union, where the forest covers half of the territory, a dynamic development of the forest sector has clearly shown the significance of good management. Participation of sectoral stakeholders in the policy development and an active involvement in attainment of objectives is in the basis of a successful development of the sector,” Jānis Dūklavs shared Latvia’s experience in forest management.
The U.N. Forest Forum, which started in 2000, is a high-level policy forum in the forestry sector. The main objective of the forum is facilitating the management, conservation and a sustainable development of all forest types.
