The Minister for Agriculture in the FAO Conference stresses the link between agriculture and social protection
From June 6 to 13 during the Latvian Presidency of the EU Council, in Rome, Italy, the 39th session of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) Conference is held. Latvian Minister for Agriculture, Jānis Dūklavs is representing the EU and its Member States.
On June 8 to 10, during the plenary session, high-level officials of the FAO Members participate to the General Debate to discuss the review of the State of Food and Agriculture 2015 (SOFA 2015). This year the publication focuses on the role of social protection and sustainable agricultural development in breaking the cycle of the rural poverty and hunger.
On June 8, during the General Debate, the Latvian Minister for Agriculture, Jānis Dūklavs delivered a speech on behalf of the EU and its Member States. In his addressee to the Conference Minister Dūklavs indicated that usually social protection policy and sustainable agriculture policy are developed and implemented independently. However, their potential synergy calls for more attention in order to accelerate the reduction of rural poverty. Meanwhile the relationship between social policy and food security deserves further attention.
The SOFA 2015 preview states that the impact of social protection versus measures to alleviate food insecurity and malnutrition remains an open question. “We look forward to further analysis and discussions on the links between social protection, rural production and food security,” stated Jānis Dūklavs in conclusion.
