United Nation Forum on Forests agrees on implementation of a more effective forest management

From May 4 to 15, in New York, associated with the Latvian Presidency of the EU Council, the 11th session of the U.N. Forest Forum was being held. Participants of the Forum were working on the joint Resolution to facilitate a further development of the Forest Forum, strengthening the international agreements on forests until 2030, ensuring the development of a strategic plan and guidelines for further work as well as improving involvement of stakeholders and non-governmental organization in the forum activities.

 

The draft Resolution, the International Arrangements on Forests Beyond 2015 will be furthered to the United Nation Economic and Social Committee for approval.

 

At the high-level meeting, the Ministerial Declaration was adopted. By the Declaration, Ministers responsible for forestry, confirm their commitment to reach a stronger and more effective international agreement on forests beyond 2015 with a view to facilitate a particularly significant role of forests in a sustainable development program beyond 2015 as well as encouraging cooperation among all the organizations, conventions and other forest-related processes.

 

We have already informed that at the high-level meeting at the Forum on Forests of May 13, the Latvian Minister for Agriculture, Jānis Dūklavs represented the European Union and expressed the common position of EU Member States. The Minister for Agriculture emphasized that a good forest management were in the basis of a dynamic development of the sector.

 

The U.N. Forum on Forests commenced in 2000 and it is the high-level policy forum in the forestry sector. Objective of the Forum is facilitating the management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests.
