On Monday, July 13th, Acting State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Liene Jansone will participate in the meeting of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Brussels, where Member States will discuss the EU livestock strategy, protein plan, agricultural markets and other current issues affecting the sector.
Ireland, which assumed the six-month Presidency of the Council of the EU on July 1st, has emphasised the importance of agriculture and fisheries in strengthening Europe’s food security, promoting economic competitiveness and ensuring the sustainability of rural and coastal communities. The Presidency has also highlighted the need to continue providing adequate funding for rural development in EU policymaking.
One of the main priorities of the Irish Presidency is to advance work on the future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) regulation for 2028–2034, with the aim of moving discussions among Member States towards an agreement on a simpler and fairer CAP. In fisheries the Irish Presidency will continue working to ensure that negotiations on fishing opportunities for 2027 are concluded in good time, providing fishers with timely clarity on which species they will be allowed to catch and in what quantities in the coming year. An issue of particular importance to Latvia.
The meeting will also address the EU’s international trade with third countries, with a focus on ensuring a level playing field for EU farmers and food producers.
