On Monday, July 14th, Minister of Agriculture Armands Krauze will participate in the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting in Brussels, where discussions will focus on the priorities of the Danish Presidency and the current situation in the food and agricultural product market.

As of July 1 this year, Denmark holds the Presidency of the EU Council, so the ministers will be introduced to Denmark’s priorities. During the Danish Presidency, key topics will include the future of the EU Common Agricultural Policy, as well as the simplification and improvement of regulations concerning agriculture, food, and fisheries policies. There will also be a strong emphasis on promoting innovation in food production and agriculture, such as increasing the use of plant-based protein sources.

Ministers will also discuss the impact of this year’s adverse weather conditions on agriculture in Europe and the situation in the agricultural and food product market in the context of Russia’s continued aggression against Ukraine. During this discussion, Minister Armands Krauze will highlight the negative impact of this year’s weather on agriculture in Latvia.

During his visit to Brussels, the Minister of Agriculture will also meet with ministers from the Baltic Sea region to discuss ways to mitigate the damage caused by seals and cormorants to fisheries. Latvia will also raise the issue of the role of peat in food production and agriculture, as well as in achieving climate goals.
