On Thursday, October 31, 2019, in Tartu, Estonia, Kaspars Gerhards, the Minister for Agriculture and experts from the Latvian Ministry of Agriculture will meet the Ministers for Agriculture of the Baltic States and Poland - Mart Jarvik, the Estonian Minister for Rural Affairs, Andrius Palionis, Lithuanian Minister for Agriculture and Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski, Polish Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, and responsible officials.

At the meeting, the Ministers for Agriculture of the Baltic States and Poland will discuss topical environmental and climate issues in the context of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform in order to reach an agreement on the common position in future CAP negotiations.

“Up to now, Latvia has been receiving the lowest level of direct payments. We are vigorously carrying on our struggle for fair direct payments, also by finding a joint position with our neighboring countries – Lithuania and Estonia. Moreover, we are also determined to be unswerving in issues concerning climate objectives – European Union climate requirements must correspond to the funding of the EU Common Agricultural Policy” emphasizes Kaspars Gerhards, the Minister for Agriculture.

The scope of discussions among Ministers and experts will also cover the previous experience in eradication of food falsifications.

In the course of the meeting, a visit to the Estonian annual agricultural exhibition, taking place in Tartu on the weekend, has been planned.
