On Wednesday, October 22nd, Minister for Agriculture Armands Krauze met with Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Secretary-General Mathias Cormann to discuss ongoing cooperation and current developments in Latvia’s forestry sector.
During the meeting, both sides discussed the requirements of the EU Deforestation Regulation and possibilities to reduce the administrative burden associated with its implementation. They also addressed the growing populations of wolves, lynx, and bears in Latvia’s forests, as well as the importance of peat for the national economy.
Minister for Agriculture Armands Krauze stated: “The role of forests in Latvia’s economy and society’s well-being requires responsible and sustainable management. Latvia has many successful examples of forest management, yet there are still lessons we can learn from other forest-rich countries — both in forest governance and policy development. Only decisions based on knowledge, research, and practical experience can ensure that Latvia’s forests are managed in a way that balances environmental protection and economic interests.”
The Minister also expressed appreciation for the OECD’s role as a think tank and an important platform for knowledge exchange, which helps to strengthen international cooperation.
