Minister of Agriculture Armands Krauze has tasked experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, in cooperation with the Rural Support Service (LAD), the Latvian Rural Advisory and Training Centre (LLKC), and the State Plant Protection Service (VAAD), to promptly assess the extent of damage caused by the heavy rainfall on May 29th and 30th, 2025, in the agricultural sector – including crops, vegetable fields, and orchards. As May 2025 brought abundant precipitation, farmers have been affected by severe flooding, with fields and gardens submerged, potentially destroying this year’s harvest.
In addition, the fruit-growing sector has reported that spring frosts in 2025 have caused significant losses to some Latvian fruit growers. Therefore, damage caused by this year’s spring frosts in orchards will also be assessed.
From Tuesday, June 3 to June 27, farmers are invited to submit information to LAD about areas affected by floods and frosts, specifying the size of the damaged areas and the crops involved.
LLKC and VAAD will conduct inspections of the affected areas until July 25.
Once the damage has been compiled and losses assessed, the Ministry of Agriculture will submit a proposal to the European Commission, requesting EU emergency support for Latvian farmers affected by the May floods and spring frosts.
