On Monday, March 30th, Minister for Agriculture Armands Krauze will participate in the meeting of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Brussels to discuss, together with ministers from the other member states, the development of the agricultural sector and current trade-related issues.

The Council agenda includes a discussion on the EU Vision for Agriculture and Food, which was developed by the European Commission and published a year ago. Ministers will discuss the progress made in its first year of implementation, with particular focus on the sector’s competitiveness, sustainability and resilience to crises.

Ministers will also discuss the next steps, taking into account geopolitical challenges, rising production costs and the need to strengthen the economic viability of the agricultural sector.

Also on the agenda is a discussion regarding the trade-related agricultural issues, including the EU’s trade relations with third countries and ongoing negotiations on free trade agreements.

Ministers will discuss the role of the energy transition in the fisheries and aquaculture sector, with particular focus on the sector’s sustainability and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

At the Council, Minister for Agriculture Armands Krauze will emphasise the need to ensure sufficient funding for the Common Agricultural Policy in the next planning period post-2027, strengthen farmers’ competitiveness and provide more flexible solutions in crisis situations.
